The Fine Memorials Bridgwater Workshop.
The Central Hub for Somerset Craftsmanship

Bridgwater is not just our headquarters, it’s the heart of Fine Memorials’ operations, home to our centralised workshop where all bespoke memorials for Somerset and Devon branches are crafted.

Founded in Ian Hale’s modest shed in 1982, the workshop has evolved into a state-of-the-art facility for hand-carving granite from India and Welsh slate, ensuring every headstone meets BRAMM and Guild of Master Craftsmen standards.

In 2000, we fully refitted the site for expanded production, and in 2024 we moved the showroom across the road to St Mary Street for easier access and to expand the workshop. This centralisation means faster turnaround and consistent quality for all our branches, with long-serving craftsmen like Jerry Deeks (foreman since 2002) overseeing every detail.

The Fine Memorials Bridgwater Legacy – 40+ Years of Craftsmanship

Ian Hale’s first pay slips as a stonemason date back to 1976. In 1982 he founded Fine Memorials, operating from a modest shed in his sister-in-law’s garden on Chilton Street, Bridgwater. From these humble beginnings, Ian hand-crafted memorials and headstones with the care that still defines us today.

What started as a one-man operation has grown into Somerset’s most trusted family-run memorial masons – one of the town’s longest-standing independent businesses.

Founder, Ian Hale's first workshop in 1982

Just a year later, in 1983, Fine Memorials moved to the Dunwear Small Industries Estate on Dunwear Lane to expand operations. This allowed Ian to better serve Bridgwater families with a wider range of hand-cut memorials and headstones. The larger space marked our first big step, laying the foundations for the craftsmanship and personal service that families across Somerset have relied on ever since.

By 1988, growing demand led Fine Memorials to new premises at the bottom of Friarn Street. This central Bridgwater location brought us closer to the community, making it easier for families to discuss bespoke headstones and memorials in a welcoming setting. It was another milestone in our commitment to serving our area with dignity and traditional stonemasonry skills.

Around 1994, we relocated to the top of Friarn Street. This prominent red-brick building had a yard entrance on the right and was closer again to the main road into Bridgwater town centre.

The increased space and visibility helped us grow further, offering more room for crafting memorials and headstones while remaining at the heart of the community we’ve served for four decades now.

In 2000 we transformed a derelict former Kwik-Fit garage on St Mary Street into our flagship showroom and workshop, a project that made the front page of the Bridgwater Mercury (“Returning building to its former glory”, July 2000).

The extensive renovations created a spacious, welcoming home for Fine Memorials, where we could better display our range of memorials and headstones. In 2007, we celebrated our 25th anniversary with another Mercury feature that highlighted our growth and included heartfelt congratulations from fellow Bridgwater businesses – a proud reminder of the wonderful community spirit in our home town that has supported us since 1982.

In 2023, to meet growing demand, we moved our showroom and offices across the road to 17A St Mary Street. This allowed us to expand the workshop with modern equipment and more space for crafting headstones and memorials, while keeping our central Bridgwater location convenient for Somerset families.

Supporting The Community

We’ve proudly supported the Bridgwater and Somerset community through decades of change – from restoring flood-damaged memorials to unveiling new plaques at Blake Gardens. When disaster strikes or heritage needs protecting, we’re there. Whether it’s cleaning and re-lettering storm-hit headstones, or helping the Civic Society preserve Admiral Blake’s legacy, we quietly give back to the town that has supported our family-run business since Ian Hale founded Fine Memorials in 1982.

flooding at Moorland Church in 2013. Fine Memorials in Bridgwater helped restore the damaged headstones.

Repairing Flood Damage

In 2013, when devastating floods struck Moorland and surrounding villages, many churchyard memorials were left submerged and badly damaged. Fine Memorials stepped in to help the Diocese of Bath & Wells and the affected families, carrying out urgent cleaning and restoration work at no cost to the bereaved. Working alongside All Churches Trust and Francis Coales Charitable Foundation, we repaired and renewed dozens of headstones so loved ones could once again be remembered with dignity – a quiet reminder of why we’ve proudly served Somerset families for over 40 years.

In 2011 Fine Memorials Bridgwater restored an historic plaque in Blake Gardens, Bridgwater.

Restoration of Historic Plaque

In 2004 Fine Memorials restored the historic slate plaque at Bridgwater’s Blake Gardens, working hand-in-hand with the Bridgwater and District Civic Society. The plaque commemorates the gardens – originally part of Admiral Robert Blake’s house and opened to the public in 1902 – and had become unreadable with age. We crafted and installed a new plaque and interpretation board, unveiled by the Mayor and Civic Society president. It’s a project we’re still proud of today – a lasting reminder of our commitment to preserving Somerset’s heritage and the families we’ve served for over 40 years. These moments remind us why we do what we do – caring for the past while helping families create lasting tributes for the future.

Our Work Carries The Highest Industry Accreditations

We are proud members of both BRAMM (British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons) and the Guild of Master Craftsmen. These independent endorsements guarantee that every headstone, gravestone and memorial we craft meets strict standards for quality, safety and ethics. Combined with long-standing partnerships with respected local craftsmen – including Richard Grant since 1994 – it means you can trust Fine Memorials to deliver lasting tributes with traditional skill and complete peace of mind.
